Art-o-Mat

Art-o-Mat

I saw this on Heather Lowe's sklog. Art-o-Mat -- cigarette vending machines that have been modified to dispense art. What a great idea! There are machines all over the country, and artists make art in the dimensions of a pack of cigarettes. They have over 400 contributing artists, and they're always looking for new work. How much does art cost from an Art-o-Mat?

Hi Cassandra,

I first found out about while in The Flying M Coffee House in Boise.
The packs are five dollars (feels just like a pack of cigarettes all in cellophane wrap.) I bought one and decided to make some of my own. I guess some museums are now using the vendors as well.

Hi Heather,

Does a percentage of the sales price go to the artist, or do artists donate the work?

I think it's a great idea!

The artist makes 50% on commission.
