New Work

These two new pieces are kind of fun. The first one is 30" x 24", poured acrylic paint, faux encaustic, and lifted paint.

The second piece is 24" x 24", and poured acrylic paint.

Voluntary Human Extinction Movement

VHEMT

Listen up! This is important. I just heard about this from my father, but evidently it's been around for a while. This is an idea whose time has come -- the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement. It's a way to save the planet from human destruction with as little suffering as possible. Just say "no" to having children.

Barbara Kingsolver

Barbara Kingsolver

There's a great interview with author Barbara Kingsolver on the Speaking of Faith radio show website. Kingsolver talks about her new book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life, and her year spent growing and raising all of the food for her family. She discusses global warming and the consequences of eating food not grown locally, and our problematic relationship with the food that we eat.

Poured Paint

This piece is fun! It's poured latex house paint on canvas -- not yet dry. I don't know how long it's going to take to dry, and what it will look like when it's dry. Since I poured the paint straight from the can, it's thick, and it could take quite a while to dry.

The paint is from the Oops! collection at Home Depot!

Water Work

This is a new painting from my "Water" series, 30" x 40". The rust is a beautiful metallic copper that shimmers when you see it in person.

Waste Not

Here's what I've been doing in an effort to not waste paint. I collect leftover paint until I have enough, and then I pour it over a canvas and create these fabulous underpaintings.

They look great covered with faux encaustic and with painting on top.

Limited Resources

Greenpa has a post on Little Blog in the Big Woods today about the limited availability of resources. It got me thinking about paint. Is paint a limited resource? I use it liberally and waste it sometimes when things don't work out as planned. This is an example of what Greenpa would call "first worlder" waste. "First world" people aren't accustomed to thinking in terms of limited resources, and they consume everything as if there's an endless supply.

I think synthetic colors are made out of petroleum, and the supply of petroleum is limited. The natural colors come from Earth pigments, and they'll run out when we've dug out all of that Earth.

Although it never occurred to me before, paint probably is a limited resource, and I'll have to find ways to treat it as such.

Yet More New Work

Maybe you've been wondering what I've been up to lately. Here's the first piece in a new series of five based on lyrical lines and grid patterns. It's 40" x 30", and a deeper blue and lavender than the photograph shows.

The Art Connection

It's a fact of life that not all artwork sells or is saleable. I do a lot of experimental work that's too good to throw away, but doesn't fit into any body of work. The Art Connection is a great organization in Boston that places artists' unsold work in nonprofit agencies that couldn't otherwise afford art. They've placed several of my pieces, and they are very business-like and professional. It would be great if we had an organization like that in Los Angeles, but until we do, I'm shipping my donations to The Art Connection in Boston!

More New Work

This piece is fun. I was planning to do some extensive painting on top of it, but I kind of like it the way it is. Maybe just something simple on top. It's 24" x 24", and it reminds me of my woven paintings.
