From the Beginning

I was lucky to be born into an artistic family. My mother, Patricia Wedin, is a very talented sculptor, painter, and all-around creative type of person. From the beginning I was surrounded with art materials and encouraged to express myself creatively. Art was both my solace and my joy. When I felt lonely or afraid, I would retreat into drawing and painting, and art also brought me great pleasure.

Today is my mother’s 87th birthday, and I thought I would take this opportunity to show you some of her work. Her exquisite abstract sculptures were painstakingly chiseled out of exotic hardwoods and marble. It took many months for her to create each one. These pieces are from the 1960s and 70s, and bear in mind that they are large. I remember coming home from school and finding her in the front yard every day, patiently tap, tap, tapping away at a huge hunk of wood or stone.

Join me in wishing Pat a happy birthday by posting a comment below!

  2. Happy Birthday, Pat, from the cold tundra of Wisconsin, USA!! I stared at your sculptures with amazement. They are fantastic. I loved seeing you on the first picture… your hands “speak”.

  3. Dera Pat,

I wish you a joyous birthday. Life is a joy when others find ways to “speak” their creative expression and it is a joy for us to “listen” to all you have to say with your sculpture. What pleasure it must be to stand beside such beautiful work and place your loving hands upon it. Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us and for sharing your beautiful daughter with us too!

    Happy Birthday!

  4. Cassandra- I was struck by your memories of coming home from school to find your Mom on the front yard tapping away at a huge chunk of wood or stone. I can envision what that must have been like- so cool! I can’t help but think- what a wonderful way for you to be exposed to the arts first hand. My Mother too was artistic and sometimes after school, I would find her hand painting and stenciling furniture or metal trays. I figured out at a very young age to get her attention, I should nurture my abilities. Of course my Mother still has the shoebox of drawings/greeting cards dating back to age 5. LOL. Throughout my life I’ve dabbled in drawings and paintings but as of the last 10 years got away from it. You reminded me of how therapeutic it is and coupled with seeing your paintings, I am once again inspired. I actually prepped some canvases last week with a background color so I’m finally ready to go.

So to your Mom- Hope you have a wonderful 87th birthday filled with love and joy. Your work is beautiful. I especially love the figure- the curves are wonderful and the tone of the wood is stunning. Thank you to both of you for sharing your many talents! Happy Birthday!

  5. Happy Birthday to a beautiful Mom! I remember the good old days, when I would come to your house. I always marveled at the modern furniture that dressed your home.

  15. I, too find that the last beautiful sculpture suggests a madonna to me. They are all lovely, and I want to wish you many added blessings and to thank Cassandra for sharing your work with me. I am so happy to be able to see yours and hers on the computer!

  16. Happy Birthday Patricia!!I wish you to live and teach for many more years. And thank you Cassandra for sharing your mom’s artistic life with us.

  17. Happy Birthday to you! I love your sculpture, but particularly the first and the last one shown. The first is so beautiful and stylish. I had no idea that twists could add so much. Maybe I will try to use that to look like an art piece! But the last one is like a movie for me. Every time I look at it it is something different, and even as I look it transforms. Each idea comes with emotions and a history too.
