Hi Friends!
My friend Wayne recently acquired one of my paintings, and I took the opportunity to interview him about the piece and his experience of art.
Wayne has other original artwork in his home, although he doesn’t see himself as an art collector. He says he’s just an everyday person who buys what he likes when he sees it. He’s drawn to whimsical art, especially animal and Western sculptures.
He saw this amusing bronze sculpture of a rabbit many years ago in Santa Fe. The piece stuck in his mind, and when he came across it again in a St. George gallery, he didn’t hesitate. The rabbit now holds a place of honor in front of the fireplace in his living room.
Wayne is also passionate about carousel horses. He commissioned a local artist to carve a horse for his home based on a piece by Gustav Dentzel, a famous animal carver from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a 3/4-size horse carved from wood, and took over a year for the artist to complete.
The painting that I created for Wayne is from my transformational series, with a palette of brilliant oranges, golden yellow, blue, turquoise and leaf green. It’s 24″ x 36″ and created using repurposed acrylic latex paint on canvas.
When I first showed him the piece, I got the feeling that it might be too much for him. It’s very strong in colors and design. He says now that he liked the painting, but it was a little bold for his taste.
We hung it in his bedroom, because he thought it looked best against the yellow walls of that space.
A couple of weeks later, he asked if I would help him relocate the painting to the living room, because he spends more time there and wanted to see it more often. I interpreted this as Wayne adjusting to the brightness of the piece.
Wayne’s painting is from my transformational healing series. I asked if, after having lived with it for a while, he thinks it has healing properties. He said that in spite of the fact that there’s a lot going on in the painting, it feels soothing and calming to him. He describes it as relaxing to look at, and said that the painting also inspires him to get out and do something!
When asked if he had any final comments, Wayne said, “Buy more art from Cassie! Everyone should have at least one painting by Cassandra Tondro to enjoy the variety of colors and the dynamic motion in the work.”
My friends are my best promoters!
