Happiness is a Cake Mix

Hi Friends,

My favorite aisle in the grocery store is the baking aisle, in particular the shelves of cake mixes. They take me back to fond memories of Home Ec class in seventh grade when I was first learning to cook. Those pictures of perfect cakes hold the promise of a beautiful future full of friends, cake-laden celebrations, and all good things to come.

Now I know that my happiness doesn’t come from anything outside of me, especially not a cake made from a boxed mix. Happiness is a state of mind that I can invoke at any time, no matter what the external circumstances.

And yet those cake mixes still have a strong allure for me, with their promise of happy times ahead. I wouldn’t dream of eating anything like that these days, but I like to look at them, and think about where I’ve been and how far I’ve come.

What’s your favorite aisle in the grocery store? I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts. You can share them with us in the comments section below.

Here’s an exciting new painting from my “Up the Ante” series, titled “Rising Tide,” 24 x 24 inches, repurposed acrylic latex paint on canvas. The colors and cell patterns on this piece are spectacular.

  1. Hi Cassandra

Sorry but cake m9x4s do nothing for me. I am not 3ven sure that cakes in general would be on my shopping list, although our local baker does a Jean apple donut.

However, your latest piece of artwork is simply spectacular. You have really taken ownership of this style of paint mixed with silicon.

    Keep it coming.

    Kind regards

  2. Hi again

Have just spotted loads of spelling errors in my previous email. Sorry, but after my eye operation, I really should read twice before hitting the submit button.

  3. When I first came to the USA in 1949, the Commissary deli aisle captivated me:sliced meats, cheeses, pickles, sauerkraut, potato salad, kippered herring, pickled beets, rye bread, mustards, cheese cake, marzipan .all the familiar foods from home in Czechoslovakia; I even worked in a German deli many years later as an adult. Now the draws are the produce and fruit aisles, especially at local farmers’ markets. I also roam the bulk foods aisles at Winco! Dr. Andrew Weil’s “Real Food” ideas/recipes also give me direction.

  4. wow your painting is gorgeous I love it. I don’t think I have a favorite aisle like your cake mixes-I do enjoy exploring the fresh fruits

  5. I often do grocery shopping with my wonderful granddaughter, Monica. We love the cake mix area and always stop there just to look and makes jokes. This is an abberation we must share with some folks, such as you. Are we setting a trend?
