Spirit Bird

Hi Friends,

This week I was inspired and deeply moved by the music of Australian singer-songwriter Xavier Rudd. Some of his songs incorpate themes of spirituality, and I especially like the hauntingly beautiful “Spirit Bird.” The lyrics seem perfect for these times. Here’s a sampling:

Give it time and we wonder why, do what we can laugh and we cry
And we sleep in your dust because we’ve seen this all before
Culture fades with tears and grace, leaving us stunned hollow with shame
We have seen this all, seen this all before
Many tribes of a modern kind doing brand new work same spirit by side
Joining hearts and hands and ancestral twine, ancestral twine
Many tribes of a modern kind doing brand new work same spirit by side
Joining hearts and hands and ancestral twine, ancestral twine

Slowly it fades
Slowly we fade

Civilizations rise and fall, people come and go, entire species live and die. It’s the same thing over and over — different time, different place. We’ve seen it all before, and our society will also fade in time.

What can we hope to leave behind from our time here on Earth? Material objects don’t last. Even the trees we plant won’t be here very long when you look at the big picture. Is it the love and kindness we offer that gets passed along, either through the collective consciousness or from one to the next to the next in a ripple effect?

One of my spirit guides is a white eagle, and Rudd’s song makes me think of this bird, whose back is pressed up against my spine. The eagle spreads its wings as I open my arms, and gives me strength and the courage to fly when I think I can’t go on.

I created a heart collage in honor of all the spirit birds who watch over and guide us. Click on the image to see it larger in your browser.

Who are your spirit guides? I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts. You can share them with us in the comments section below.

With love and appreciation,
Cassandra
