One of my heroes had a birthday last week. Dr. John McDougall turned 74, and Chef AJ organized a surprise birthday celebration for him online where we all got to watch and join in! You can see the replay of it on Youtube. The virtual party featured 25 of his best friends — other luminaries and legends in the plant-based world.
Dr. McDougall has been studying, speaking and writing about the effects of nutrition for over 50 years. He is the founder and director of the McDougall Center in Santa Rosa, and has helped thousands of people regain their health. He is the author of many books on nutrition and diet, and he makes much of this information available for free on his website. He feels that the information is so important that it should be available to everyone.
He has made a huge difference in my life and the lives of so many others. I read his first book, The McDougall Plan, in about 1985, and I’ve been vegan ever since.
But it’s not just being vegan. While it’s true that animal foods are the cause of many health problems, oils are also problematic, as well as vegan junk foods that contain a lot of oil. On the McDougall diet, all oils are avoided. Oil is a primary cause of inflammation. I’ve noticed that whenever I eat oil, I start to feel arthritic pain in my joints. I don’t have any arthritis as long as I stay off of oils.
Being vegan isn’t always easy, but I feel so much better eating this way, which is motivation to continue. I’m grateful to Dr. McDougall for doing the research and providing us with information on how to regain and maintain our health.
Happy Birthday, Dr. McDougall! May you have many more years of continued good health.
