Hi Friends,
After making the tire track paintings, I was thinking about what else I could use to create patterns. The answer that came to me was shoes! But not my good shoes.
I went to a local thrift store and looked for shoes with interesting designs on the soles. I found two pairs that I liked and brought them home to experiment with.
My first thought was to just use black, like the tire track paintings. I put the shoes on, stepped in black paint, and walked on the canvas. Here’s how they looked with only black.
They needed color, so I added several more layers of shoes prints.

“Autumnal Dance,” 40 x 40 inches, repurposed acrylic latex paint on canvas
At first I thought they looked too busy, but over time the busyness has grown on me. I like the transparency of some of the paints and the way the layers move forward and recede back. I decided to own what has become one of my styles — busy and a little chaotic yet pulled together into a cohesive whole.
Which other brands of shoes have interesting soles? I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts. You can share them with us in the comments section below.

Good one, Marinus! That song is great, and perfect for the autumnal piece. Thanks for sharing it.
I love them all. I agree the busy-ness becomes cohesive, and the colors are wonderful.
Thanks, Sherry. Glad you like them!
