Dear Beloveds,
I had a strange dream early in the morning on New Year’s Day. In the dream, I was asleep and I heard a commotion outside. It was still dark out, but I got up to see what was going on. There was a huge group of reporters in my front yard, and I had no idea what they were doing there. I went outside, and they told me I had won a MacArthur Genius Award. They wanted me to comment, but I was too stunned to say anything. I couldn’t imagine who had nominated me for the award or how anyone even knew about me. I could see that this was going to change my life in a big way, and I felt anxiety and pressure to succeed. I felt nervous about having all eyes on me now, and I wondered if I was worthy of the award.
It was an interesting dream, because the MacArthur Awards aren’t even on my radar. I never think about them, and I don’t know that much about them. Yet there they were in my dream.
I don’t know what the dream means, but it started me thinking about how we’re all geniuses in our own ways. We each have our own spark of light to contribute in making the world a special place. We each have a role to play in repairing the broken parts of our world. And we need everyone’s genius to get us through these difficult times.
One of my contributions is working with color, and I used it this week to create another handwoven scarf. This one is a stunning combination of purple, orange and gray, inspired by the yarn I used for the warp. Click on the images for more information about my handwoven scarves.
Will weaving scarves save the world? Maybe not, but I’ve come to believe that these simple heartfelt acts are what will lead us to a better and more unified planet.
That’s where your genius comes in. What you choose to do doesn’t need to be profound. It doesn’t need to be big. It just needs to come from your heart.

Thank you, Deborah. Yes, this scarf was a bit of a surprise to me as well. I don’t get to see the whole thing until it’s done and I unroll it from the take-up bar on the loom. It is kind of stunning, isn’t it? I’m wondering how I can incorporate this into my painting.
