My mom is on an archaeological dig going through everything in her house in preparation for her move. One of the things she found and gave to me was all of the Mother’s Day cards I made for her when I was a kid.
I thought I’d share some of them with you in case you’re under any illusion that I showed artistic promise at an early age. I most definitely did not!
I think for most of us art is an acquired set of skills rather than innate talent. You must have an interest and persistence to develop the abilities necessary to become proficient. Not very many people are born artists.
I’ve been doing some more painting with natural earth pigments, and I came up with a piece that I like. This is burnt sienna, orange ochre, yellow ochre and graphite gray on raw cotton canvas, 36 x 48 inches. Click on the image for more details and to see it in a browser.
It’s currently hanging over the couch in my living room, and it beautifully complements the space.
I’m slowly learning how to work with the natural pigments, and what they can and cannot do. It’s very different from using acrylics or house paints, and I have to adjust my expectations accordingly.

Thank you! I was afraid you were going to say you went out and dug them up yourself, then I’d be out of luck. Will check out the site. I often use dried leaves and flowers in my work; adding natural earth tones would be a next thing to try. I am ready to get back to work after not doing any art since November. Just busy with other things. Best to you!
That’s funny, Holly! The dirt around here isn’t all that inspiring. Pretty much just dirt brown. One of the things I like about the natural pigments as opposed to leaves and flowers is that they don’t fade. Something to consider if you’re selling your work. Keep me posted on what you’re doing!
