Coffee Cup Creativity

Hi Friends,

I’ve been working on a collage piece using paper cups scavenged from restaurants and social gatherings. When it’s done, it will become part of my “Talkin’ Trash” series of collage work.

It’s made using disposable paper coffee cups, water cups and cold beverage cups, and it has been surprisingly difficult to do.

I cut the cups into sections, and the pieces wouldn’t flatten out, even when I placed them under heavy books. That made it hard to glue them to the wood panel. They kept popping up and they didn’t want to stay glued down.

Here’s how the piece looked in process. It’s 20 x 20 inches.

My original idea was a mandala or a flower shape, but I think it needs to break out of the rigid uniformity of the sliced sections of cups. Also, the corners look empty. The white pieces should have extended to the edges of the corners, but they weren’t long enough for that. The corners need to be brought into harmony with the rest of the piece.

This is where I have to get creative and think outside of the box. The basics are there, but the basics aren’t enough. It needed something more.

I decided to play off of the circular shapes of the Chipotle and Panda Express logos. I added small circles and the leftover shapes from the circle cutouts. Here’s how it looks now.

Better, and it might be done. I’ll set it aside for a few days and then look at it again, with fresh eyes.

When does your creativity come into play? I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts. You can share them with us in the comments section below.

With love and appreciation,
Cassandra
