What Is Ours to Do?

Hi Friends,

The opening reception at Bird Dog Arts last Saturday night was great! Despite 104 degree temperatures a lot of people showed up and the art looked spectacular. Here are a couple of pictures of how my work looks hanging in the gallery. The gray walls really make the colors pop. I also like that all three rooms of the gallery are large, so you can see the work from a distance as well as up close.

The show will be up for three months, so if you’re traveling in California during the summer, you might want to stop by. Bird Dog Arts is right off of the 5 freeway in Tejon Ranch, at the Tejon Outlet Mall.

Since then I’ve been focusing on play. I’m now of the opinion that if art isn’t playful and fun it’s not worth doing. At least for me at this stage in my life.

I’ve been working with black, which might sound dark and morose, but I’m really enjoying it. Black gives a strong contrast to other colors. These are works in progress, and are just at the beginning stage of their development.

I’ve also been thinking about my unique marks. There are so many good painters and I often think I’d like to be able to paint like them, but that’s not my work to do. My work is my own, and my marks are unique to me just as your marks are unique to you.

I keep coming back to this message because it’s hard for me to remember. I’m easily influenced by other people’s work, and I often go off on tangents that aren’t true to myself. I have to keep bringing myself back to my own style, my own marks, and my own work.

What is mine to do and who am I? These are questions that repeatedly come up in my mind.

What is yours to do? I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts. You can share them with us in the comments section below.

With love and appreciation,
Cassandra

    1. Thank you, Holly! Yes, I’m really happy with the way the show looks, and the black paintings are coming along. It’s a bit of a challenge, but it wouldn’t be interesting if it weren’t!
