Pink + Green = Cooties?

Late Season Sunflower

Hi Friends,

Does anyone else remember this from elementary school? If you wore pink and green together on a certain day of the week, I think it was Thursday, you had cooties.

I had no idea what cooties were, but I sure didn’t want to be singled out and accused of having them. So I was very careful to never wear pink and green on Thursdays.

Of course this only applied to the girls, because boys couldn’t wear pink in those days. And girls were required to wear dresses.

I had a beautiful skirt and top in a pink and green floral print that I was always hesitant to wear, lest I become a bearer of the dreaded cooties.

It’s kind of silly, but also not. It’s childlore that borders on bullying and instilled feared in us.

So in honor of cooties and to release the reign of terror they once held, I created a pink and green handwoven scarf. To be worn on Thursdays, of course.

I also made a similar scarf in blues and oranges.

Speaking of holidays shows, I’m participating in the Unitarian Universalist Church holiday arts and crafts show again this year. I’ll be showing my handwoven scarves and table runners, silk leaf print scarves, some collages and a whole lot of handmade cards. Stop by if you’re in the Ventura area.
