Black and White

I've been doing some experimental paintings in black and white, acrylic latex on canvas. What do you think?

The sizes in order are 24" x 24", 24" x 24", 18" x 24", and the last three are 16" x 12".

Experimental Work

I'm finally back in the studio, and doing experimental studies for larger pieces. I thought these three were particularly nice. They're 12" x 16" and 16" x 12", depending on orientation.

Latex Landscape

I thought this painting turned out sort of nice. It has a landscape feel to it. It's latex on canvas, 24" x 30". I misted it with water while it was still wet.

Soy Milk Paint

I'm back to working with the soy milk paints. It's interesting how the paint settles while it's drying and picks up the pattern of whatever is underneath the canvas -- in this case, the bricks of the patio.

New Diptych

I think this diptych is interesting. Each panel is 36" x 24", latex on canvas. I'm finding that it's difficult to work with latex in this really dry weather. It cracks badly -- I guess because the surface dries too fast -- and the cracks aren't very attractive. I'm hoping for some humidity!

New Grouping

This is a new grouping of poured latex paintings. Each panel is 48" x 24", so the overall size of the piece is 48" x 96" or so, depending on how far apart the pieces are hung. Click on the image to see a larger view.

New Latex Paintings

These are two of the latex paintings I did a couple of weeks ago. They're finally dry enough to stand up and be photographed, but not yet completely dry. As the weather gets cooler, my paintings are taking even longer to dry, and it slows me down. These two are both 24" x 30", latex on canvas.

Another New Piece

Here's another new painting in search of a title. This one is 24" x 24", acrylic on canvas, poured and lifted paint.

It must seem like I'm doing a painting a day lately, but all of these have been in progress for a long time. I'm just now getting around to finishing them up. They have many layers of paint, and there's a lot of drying time between each layer.

New Poured Piece

This is one of the poured latex paintings I did the other day, 48" x 12". It's the only one that's dry enough to stand up and be photographed. I love the graphic look.

Oops!

I've been doing some poured paintings today using Oops! house paint from Home Depot, and it is incredibly messy. I need a much bigger studio space if I'm going to do much more of this. Puddles of paint form under the sawhorses, and it becomes difficult not to step in them. And who knew that a 36" x 48" canvas with house paint poured onto it was so heavy? But they look great! I'll post pictures when they're dry, but that won't be for another couple of months. Poured latex is very slow to dry.

Experimental Work

This is a new experimental piece. I used the canvas as a loom. You can see the brass nails sticking out on the sides. It's interesting, but I'm not sure if it's a direction worth pursuing. 18" x 18", acrylic on canvas, hand-dyed yarn, and brass nails.

New Work

These two new pieces are kind of fun. The first one is 30" x 24", poured acrylic paint, faux encaustic, and lifted paint.

The second piece is 24" x 24", and poured acrylic paint.

Poured Paint

This piece is fun! It's poured latex house paint on canvas -- not yet dry. I don't know how long it's going to take to dry, and what it will look like when it's dry. Since I poured the paint straight from the can, it's thick, and it could take quite a while to dry.

The paint is from the Oops! collection at Home Depot!

Waste Not

Here's what I've been doing in an effort to not waste paint. I collect leftover paint until I have enough, and then I pour it over a canvas and create these fabulous underpaintings.

They look great covered with faux encaustic and with painting on top.

Yet More New Work

Maybe you've been wondering what I've been up to lately. Here's the first piece in a new series of five based on lyrical lines and grid patterns. It's 40" x 30", and a deeper blue and lavender than the photograph shows.

More New Work

This piece is fun. I was planning to do some extensive painting on top of it, but I kind of like it the way it is. Maybe just something simple on top. It's 24" x 24", and it reminds me of my woven paintings.

New Work

Here's what the underpainting from four posts back turned into. I covered it with a faux encaustic gel to obscure the marbled look, and then did some painting on top. It's 24" x 30".

More New Work

I thought this piece turned out pretty nice. It's large -- 36" x 48". My friend, who doesn't like me to mention his name on this blog and wants to remain anonymous, said I shouldn't tell you how I did this painting. He also doesn't want me to mention that his birthday is this Sunday, June 17th! Any guesses about how this painting was done?

Serendipity

The white plastic bowls I use to mix paint end up with a beautiful patina over time. These are not color combinations I would normally choose, and yet they work well together.

I added some red to this piece today. It's hazy looking because it has a faint gold glaze, which scatters the light. It's not quite that hazy looking when you see it in person.

New Work

Here's a piece I've been working on for a while. It's not done yet, but I haven't decided what to do next. It's 24" x 30".

This little piece is kind of fun. It's tinted molding paste with several layers of paint on top. Then I sanded it down to reveal the layers. It's small -- 6" x 6" on canvas board.

I like this one, too. If I'd known the red was going to turn out so nice, I would have put it over the entire painting. It's 24" x 30".

This underpainting is kind of fun.

Zen Blues

Here's how this piece turned out. I call it Zen Blues, and it's 30" x 24". The blue colors remind me of indigo, and it has a Japanese feel to it. You can see an earlier incarnation of it here.

Textured Painting

I'm experimenting with molding paste, and I like the way this piece turned out. It's 24" x 24". I'm thinking of doing some landscapes with molding paste in the foreground to resemble geographical detail.

New Work

I'm starting on a new body of work, but I'm still in the experimental phase. I love the way this underpainting turned out.

Then I put a layer of lifted paint over part of it, and it completely obscured the underpainting.

So I let it dry a bit, and then I took the hose to it. Here's how it looks now, after being hosed down.

Better, but what next? It needs something more, but I haven't figured out what yet.
